Interesting Questions About
the Bible in Oslo
“Adam and Eve … they were Norweg
ian, right?”
This question from a 15-year-old
Norwegian student might seem like
an
easy one. Yet it shows the deep cur
iosity that a new generation in Nor
way
is bringing to the Bible, now seen
by many as a relic of a bygone era.
In Norway, about 2% of people atte
nd church, even though 70% of the
population belongs to the historic
ally state-mandated Church of Nor
way.
This mirrors a common shift in Wes
tern Europe: People still feel pressu
re
to belong to a religious tradition,
but they are less engaged with the
ir
faith
than ever.
But there is still good news to be
found. Approximately 50% of 14and
15-year-olds take confirmation clas
ses through the Church of Norway
each
year. It may be just a rite of passag
e for some, but it creates an opp
ortunity
to spark curiosity about the Bible
and who Jesus is.
Enter Bibelselskapet, the Norweg
ian Bible Society based in Oslo, whi
ch
has been on a mission to make the
Bible more accessible and applica
ble.
They created a beautifully designe
d Konfirmantbibelen, a Bible give
n to
students at their confirmation, as
well as a digital curriculum filled
with
BibleProject resources that helps
students talk about loneliness, anx
iety,
the meaning of life, and more.
Even in a country with declining
church attendance, a whole new
generation is beginning to see the
mselves in the Bible and to ask
interesting questions about this anc
ient literature alongside us.
